E.M. Remarque

Erich Maria Remarque (1898–1970), born in Osnabrück, was a German-American writer. He attended a Catholic teacher-training seminary and was drafted as a soldier in 1916. After the First World War, he worked first as a substitute teacher and odd-job worker, and later as an editor in Hanover and Berlin. He became particularly well known for the novels *All Quiet on the Western Front* and *The Road Back*. He left Germany in 1932 and became an American citizen in 1947.
