Elisabeth Markstein (1929–2013) was an Austrian translator and Russian-language interpreter. She studied Slavic studies at the universities of Vienna and Moscow and completed doctoral studies at the Vienna Institute for Interpreting and Translation. From 1966 onward, she taught at institutes of interpreting and Slavic studies in Vienna, Innsbruck, and Graz; in 1975–76, she was a visiting lecturer at the University of Texas at Austin. Her areas of focus included modern Russian literature, cultural studies, translation practice, and literary translation. In 1989, she received Austria’s State Prize for Translation and was honored for her translations of Russian authors.
