Elias Canetti

Elias Canetti (1905–1994) was a German-language writer born in Rustschuk, Bulgaria. He studied chemistry and natural sciences in Vienna, where he received a doctorate in 1929. His best-known works include the novel *Auto-da-Fé* (*Die Blendung*, 1935), the social and cultural study *Crowds and Power* (*Masse und Macht*, 1960), plays, notebooks, and a three-volume autobiography. Canetti emigrated to England in 1938. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1981 and also received, among other honors, the Georg Büchner Prize.
