Elena Poniatowska

Elena Poniatowska, born in Paris in 1932, is a Mexican writer and journalist of Polish-Mexican heritage. Her family fled to Mexico in 1941. Her journalistic and literary work focuses chiefly on social and political issues and gives voice to marginalized communities. Among other honors, she received Mexico’s National Journalism Prize. In 2013, she was awarded the Cervantes Prize, the most prestigious literary award in the Spanish-speaking world.
