Eka Kurniawan was born in 1975 in West Java, Indonesia, and studied philosophy at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta. He completed his degree with a thesis on Pramoedya Ananta Toer and socialist realism. He wrote novels, short stories, screenplays and essays, and also drew comics. His novel Beauty Is a Wound marked his international breakthrough, and his work has been translated into more than thirty languages. In 2016, he was nominated for the Man Booker International Prize for Man Tiger.
