Eduardo Mendoza, born in Barcelona in 1943, is a Spanish writer. After studying law, he worked briefly as a lawyer and from 1973 to 1982 as an interpreter for the United Nations in New York. His first novel, „La verdad sobre el caso Savolta“, was published in 1975 and received the Premio de la Crítica. His best-known works include „The City of Marvels“, „A Light Comedy“ and „No Word from Gurb“, a humorous novel that crosses genre boundaries. Mendoza also wrote detective novels featuring an unnamed protagonist, essays and a play in Catalan. His work has received numerous awards, including the European Book Prize, the Franz Kafka Prize and the Cervantes Prize.
