Edgar Wallace (Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace, 1875–1932) was an English writer, journalist, and dramatist. He grew up in poverty in London and worked a variety of odd jobs before becoming a journalist and war correspondent during the Second Boer War. He subsequently devoted himself increasingly to writing. His first crime novel, The Four Just Men, was published in 1905. Wallace wrote numerous crime novels, short stories, plays, and screenplays, and became one of the most successful English-language crime writers.
