Dorothy Gallagher

Dorothy Gallagher was born in New York in 1935 to Russian-Jewish émigré parents and grew up in Washington Heights. She first worked as a journalist and later became an editor at Redbook magazine. She subsequently wrote for publications including the New York Times and Grand Street. Her books include the memoir Life Stories, Hannah’s Daughters, an account of a matrilineal family, and All the Right Enemies, a biography of the Italian-American anarchist Carlo Tresca. As a child, she believed a portrait of Lenin in her family’s living room depicted her grandfather.
