Dorothy B. Hughes (1904–1993) was born in Kansas City and studied journalism. She published her first volume of poetry in 1931 and began writing novels in the 1940s. Her novel *In a Lonely Place* was adapted into a 1950 film starring Humphrey Bogart. In 1978, Hughes received the Grand Master Award from the Edgar Allan Poe Awards for her lifetime achievement.
