Dorothee Riese was born near Göttingen in 1989 and grew up in Romania. She studied International Literatures, Slavic Studies, and the Culture and History of Central and Eastern Europe in Tübingen, Moscow, Frankfurt (Oder), and Barnaul. In Leipzig, she studied creative writing. Riese worked at the Buchenwald Memorial in Weimar and was affiliated with the Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe.
