Doris Lessing (1919–2013) was a British writer. Born in what was then Persia, she grew up on a farm in the British colony of Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. She moved to England in 1949 and published her first novel, *The Grass Is Singing* (*African Tragedy*), in 1950. Her wide-ranging work includes novels, short stories, poetry and autobiographical writing. Her best-known books include *The Golden Notebook* and the *Children of Violence* series. She received numerous awards, including the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2007. Lessing died in London in 2013.
