David Macaulay, born in England in 1946, studied architecture and worked as an author and illustrator. After his studies, he traveled extensively and explored architectural and cultural history. He drew on this knowledge in numerous nonfiction books for children and young adults, including *Sie bauten eine Kathedrale* and *Das Mammutbuch der Technik*. His work received several awards, including the Caldecott Medal and the German Youth Literature Prize, and was translated into many languages.
