David Lama

David Lama was born in Innsbruck in 1990 to an Austrian mother and a Nepalese mountain guide father. He became known as a sport climber and mountaineer: at 14 he won a youth world championship, at 15 he became the youngest World Cup winner, and at 16 the youngest double European champion in the history of sport climbing. In 2012, together with Peter Ortner, he made a free ascent of the Compressor Route on Cerro Torre. His other achievements included the first solo ascent of Lunag Ri in Nepal in 2018. Lama published the books “High. Genial unterwegs an Berg und Fels” (2010) and “Free. Der Cerro Torre, das Unmögliche und ich”. He died in an avalanche on Howse Peak in Banff National Park, Canada, on April 16, 2019.
