David Dalton

David Dalton (1934–2022) was an American violist and musicologist. He initially studied violin at the Eastman School of Music and turned to the viola after meeting violist William Primrose. He earned his doctorate at Indiana University and also studied at the Hochschule für Musik in Munich. Dalton was a professor of viola at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, and worked closely with Primrose. Together they established the Primrose International Viola Archive there. Dalton published books and documentaries on Primrose, including “Playing the Viola: Conversations with William Primrose,” as well as viola editions and numerous scholarly articles. He also held leadership roles in national and international viola organizations and edited the “Journal of the American Viola Society”.
