Dai Sijie was born in 1954 in Fujian Province, China. From 1971 to 1974, he was sent to a mountain village as part of the Cultural Re-education movement. After Mao’s death, he studied art history and emigrated to Paris in 1984. His first novel, “Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress,” achieved international success and was adapted into a French-Chinese film production.
