Claudine Nierth, born in 1967, is a German activist who works on direct democracy and citizens’ assemblies. After studying art and spending several years on stage, she focused on the artistic shaping of social processes and on democratic development. In 1997, she was one of the initiators of the “More Democracy in Hamburg” popular petition, and in 2011 of the “More Democracy in Schleswig-Holstein” popular initiative. In 2000, she travelled across Germany in the “Omnibus for Direct Democracy,” a mobile sculpture. Nierth served as federal spokesperson for Mehr Demokratie e. V., was a member of Germany’s 15th Federal Convention and of the Austrian parliament’s commission on strengthening democracy. In 2019, she helped initiate and organize the Citizens’ Assembly Democracy. She was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2018.
