Chul Woo Lim was born in 1954 on Wando, an island off Korea’s southern coast. He taught creative writing for several decades at Hanshin University in Seoul. As a student, he witnessed the 1980 Gwangju uprising, which was suppressed by the military dictatorship and became a defining influence on his writing. He later addressed the events in the five-volume novel “Bomnal” (roughly “A Day in Spring,” 1997). Lim received several literary awards, and his works have been translated into English, French, Spanish, Japanese, and Chinese.
