Christiane Hoffmann is a German author and journalist specializing in Eastern Europe. She studied Slavic studies, Eastern European history and journalism in Freiburg, Leningrad and Hamburg. She worked for almost 20 years at the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, including as a foreign correspondent in Moscow and Tehran. In 2013, she joined the Spiegel bureau in Berlin as deputy head and later worked there as an author. She also appeared frequently as a guest on radio and television. During the coalition government led by the Social Democrats, Greens and Free Democrats, she was appointed deputy government spokesperson. Hoffmann is the daughter of two refugees; her father’s family came from Silesia and her mother’s from East Prussia.
