Hans Christian Andersen (1805–1875) was a Danish writer and one of the best-known authors of fairy tales. He was born in Odense, the son of a shoemaker. After his father’s early death, he initially worked in a factory and later tried his hand at acting and singing before turning to writing. With support from King Frederick VI, he was able to continue his education. A state travel scholarship enabled him to travel through Europe, experiences that influenced his literary work.
