Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860–1935) was an American writer, feminist, essayist, and lecturer. She was born in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1892, she achieved her literary breakthrough with the story “The Yellow Wallpaper,” an autobiographically influenced work addressing personal experiences of mental distress and social expectations. Gilman also published critical studies and political writings, including works on women’s financial dependence, as well as the feminist utopian novel “Herland.” As a women’s rights advocate and engaging public speaker, she addressed gender equality and social reform. She died in Pasadena, California.
