Charles Robert Darwin (1809–1882) was an English naturalist and is regarded as a founder of modern evolutionary theory. After abandoning medical studies in Edinburgh, he studied theology at Cambridge but devoted himself primarily to natural science. From 1831 to 1836, he joined a research voyage aboard HMS Beagle as a naturalist, visiting the Galápagos Islands and making extensive geological and biological observations. His major work, On the Origin of Species, was published in 1859 and explained evolution through natural selection. Among his other significant works is The Descent of Man (1871). Darwin was buried in Westminster Abbey.
