Chaim Grade (1910–1982), born in Vilna, was one of the leading Yiddish writers of the 20th century. He received an Orthodox Jewish education while also reading secular Yiddish literature extensively, and published poetry as well as prose. After the German occupation of Vilna, he fled to the Soviet Union in 1941; his wife and mother were murdered. From 1946, he published several volumes of poetry in Paris before emigrating to the United States in 1948. His novels, novellas, and stories often portrayed the traditional Jewish world of Lithuania.
