Catherine Meurisse, born in 1980 in Niort, France, studied French and literature in Poitiers and illustration at the École Estienne and the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. From 2001 onward, she worked for the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and was part of its editorial team from 2005 to 2015. She published drawings and cartoons in publications including Libération and Le Nouvel Observateur, and illustrated children’s books. She also created comics for children and adults. Her autobiographical graphic novel The Lightness addresses the January 2015 attack on Charlie Hebdo. In 2020, she became the first comic artist elected to the Painting section of the Académie des Beaux-Arts.
