Carlos Franz, born in Geneva in 1959 as the son of a Chilean diplomat, is a Chilean writer. He studied law and sociology in Chile and worked as a literary critic for major newspapers in Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, and Mexico. He also taught literature in Washington and Santiago de Chile. His first novel, »Santiago cero«, was published in 1989. In the year of its publication, he received the Premio Internacional de Novela de la Nación/Sudamericana for his political novel »El desierto« (German: »Das verschwundene Meer«, 2005).
