Carl von Clausewitz (1780–1831) was a Prussian major general, army reformer, and scholar and ethicist of military affairs. He is best known for his unfinished major work *On War*, which examines the theory of war. After his death, his widow, Marie von Clausewitz, published the work posthumously at her own expense.
