C. S. Forester (Cecil Scott Forester) was born in Cairo in 1899 and grew up in England. He began studying medicine but soon turned to literature. He became best known for his sea-adventure novels featuring the fictional captain Horatio Hornblower. He also wrote biographies, nonfiction and children’s books, as well as plays. During the Second World War, Forester worked in Hollywood. He died in California in 1966.
