Boris Cyrulnik, born in Bordeaux in 1937, worked as a neuropsychiatrist and focused particularly on the concept of resilience. His parents, Jewish immigrants from Poland, were murdered in Nazi extermination camps during the Second World War; Cyrulnik himself narrowly escaped death as a child. He wrote numerous nonfiction books that received wide attention and were translated into many languages.
