Binyavanga Wainaina

Binyavanga Wainaina (1971–2019) was a Kenyan journalist and writer. After studying economics, he initially worked for the Sunday Times in Cape Town. In 2000, he returned to Kenya and became one of the co-founders of the literary magazine Kwani?. From 2009, he directed the Chinua Achebe Center for African Writers and Artists at Bard College in upstate New York. In 2016, he was a fellow in the Berliner Künstlerprogramm of the German Academic Exchange Service. In 2007, he declined inclusion in the World Economic Forum’s Young Global Leaders forum in Davos.
