Bernd Stegemann, born in Münster in 1967, is a German dramaturg and theatre scholar. He studied philosophy and German studies as well as theatre directing, and received his doctorate under Manfred Brauneck. From 1999 onward, he worked as a dramaturg and chief dramaturg at various theatres, including the TAT in Frankfurt am Main, the Deutsches Theater Berlin and the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz. In 2005, he was appointed professor of theatre history and dramaturgy at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin. Stegemann has published numerous books on dramaturgy and theatre, including Kritik des Theaters, Das Gespenst des Populismus, Wutkultur and Die Öffentlichkeit und ihre Feinde. He also founded the “Lektionen” book series at Theater der Zeit.
