Bernard Werber was born in Toulouse in 1962. He began writing stories for fanzines at the age of 14. He studied criminology and journalism and subsequently worked for ten years as a science journalist for Le Nouvel Observateur. He became known for his debut novel The Ants, followed by The Day of the Ants and The Revolution of the Ants. The Ants received the Prix des lecteurs de Science et Avenir.
