Benjamin Ferencz

Benjamin Ferencz was born in Transylvania in 1920 and emigrated to the United States with his family. After studying law at Harvard University, he served as a soldier during the Allied landings in Normandy in 1944. He subsequently investigated war crimes behind the front lines and in liberated concentration camps. In 1946, he was one of the chief prosecutors at the Nuremberg trials. He later worked on the restitution of property stolen during the Holocaust, took part in reparations negotiations between the Federal Republic of Germany and Israel, and contributed to the establishment of the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
