Belinda Bauer grew up in England and South Africa. She worked as a journalist and screenwriter before publishing her debut novel, *Blacklands* (German: *Das Grab im Moor*). The novel won the CWA Gold Dagger for crime novel of the year. Bauer also received the BAFTA Award for Young British Screenwriters. In 2018, one of her novels was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize. Her books have been translated into more than 20 languages.
