Bear Grylls served as a soldier in the British Special Air Service (SAS), leaving the unit after a 1996 parachute accident in which he fractured three vertebrae. At the age of 23, he climbed Mount Everest. He also became known through documentary and survival television series, including *Man vs. Wild* and *Ultimate Survival*. As an author, he published the autobiography *Schlamm, Schweiß und Tränen*, which became a SPIEGEL bestseller, as well as other survival books.
