B. K. S. Iyengar (1918–2014) was an Indian yoga teacher and an influential figure in modern yoga. He came from humble circumstances and devoted many decades to intensive yoga practice and teaching. From 1954 onward, he traveled first in Europe and later around the world to teach yoga. In 1975, he founded the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Pune, India. His students included, among others, violinist Yehudi Menuhin, Jiddu Krishnamurti, and Pandit Nehru. His teaching contributed to the establishment of Iyengar yoga institutes and centers in numerous countries.
