Axel Honneth

Axel Honneth (born 1949 in Essen) is a German social philosopher. From 2001 onward, he served as director of the Institute for Social Research at Goethe University Frankfurt, and in 2011 he became Jack C. Weinstein Professor of the Humanities at Columbia University in New York. He received the Ernst Bloch Prize in 2015 and, for The Idea of Socialism, the Bruno Kreisky Prize for the Political Book in 2016. In 2021, he delivered the Benjamin Lectures in Berlin on the subject of his book The Working Sovereign.
