Avtar Singh was born in Amritsar, northern India, in 1972. He studied English and philosophy in California before returning to India in 1996. He subsequently worked for several magazines, including Man’s World and Time Out Delhi, and served as editor-in-chief of the Indian arts and culture magazine The Indian Quarterly. His first novel, The Beauty of These Present Things, was published in 2000; Nekropolis is his second novel.
