Augustus (63 BCE–14 CE) was the first emperor of Rome. The adopted son of Julius Caesar, he rose to power after the Roman civil wars and ruled from 30 BCE until his death in 14 CE. He brought the century of civil wars to an end and established the Principate, a form of monarchical rule that formally preserved republican institutions. His reign was marked by internal stability as well as numerous wars of expansion.
