A. S. Byatt (1936–2023) was a British writer and literary critic. She achieved international recognition with her novel *Possession*, which won the Booker Prize in 1990. Her work includes nine novels, numerous short stories and works of literary criticism. She received many awards for her writing and was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 1999. Byatt was born in Yorkshire and died in London.
