Armin Maiwald was born in Cologne in 1940. After studying theatre studies, philosophy and German, he began his career as an assistant director in 1963 and directed for WDR from 1965. Together with Siegfried Mohrhof and Gert K. Müntefering, he developed the “Lach- und Sachgeschichten für Fernsehanfänger” from 1968, which became “Sendung mit der Maus” in 1971. Maiwald shaped the programme’s factual stories as a director and narrator, with his distinctive voice becoming a hallmark. He also directed “Robbi, Tobbi und das Fliewatüüt” and “Der Spatz vom Wallrafplatz”. His work received several awards, including the Adolf Grimme Award, the German Television Award and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
