Apuleius (Lucius Apuleius) was born around 125 CE in Madaura, in present-day Algeria, and probably died around 170. He was a writer, orator, and philosopher of the Platonic school. He studied in Carthage and Athens and also spent time in Rome. His best-known work is the Latin novel Metamorphoses, also known as The Golden Ass, regarded as the only fully preserved novel in Latin. It includes the famous tale of Cupid and Psyche. Apuleius also wrote rhetorical, philosophical, and legal works. He was prosecuted for alleged love magic but was acquitted.
