Antonio Skármeta (born 1940 in Chile) is a Chilean writer. After leaving Chile in 1973, he lived in exile in Berlin for many years. From 2000 to 2003, he served there as his country’s ambassador. He is known, among other works, for the novel *Burning Patience*, which was adapted into the film *Il Postino*. Skármeta received Spain’s Premio Planeta literary prize for *The Dancer and the Thief*.
