Anton P Cechov

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860–1904) was a Russian writer and physician. During his 23-year literary career, he produced more than 600 works. His best-known plays include *The Seagull*, *The Cherry Orchard*, *Three Sisters*, and *Uncle Vanya*. His concise short stories, including *The Lady with the Dog* and *The Man in a Case*, also had a major influence on the modern short story. In 1890, he spent three months on Sakhalin, an island used as a penal colony, where he conducted investigations as part of a census. Chekhov received the Pushkin Prize in 1888 and the Order of Saint Stanislaus, third class, in 1899.
