Anton de Kom

Anton de Kom was born in Suriname in 1898. He initially worked as a commercial clerk. Because of his political activities, he was banished to the Netherlands, where he worked as a journalist and became involved in anticolonial organizations. His major work, *We Slaves of Suriname*, was first published in German in 1936 by an émigré publisher in the Soviet Union. Anton de Kom died in April 1945 at Neuengamme concentration camp.
