Anne McCaffrey (1926–2011) was a science fiction author. She studied Slavic languages at Radcliffe College as well as voice and opera direction, and published her first short stories in the 1950s. Her celebrated Dragonriders of Pern saga began in 1967 with “Weyr Search.” The story won the Hugo Award in 1968, and “Dragonrider” received the Nebula Award in 1969. McCaffrey was the first woman to win both awards. She later combined the two stories into her novel “Dragonflight.” From 1970 onward, she lived in Ireland and bred racehorses. She continued the Pern saga, later in collaboration with her son Todd.
