Andy Warhol, born Andrew Warhola in Pittsburgh in 1928, was an American artist. After a successful career in advertising, he gained recognition as a painter and draftsman in the late 1950s. A leading figure of the Pop Art movement, he also worked as a filmmaker and produced the music group The Velvet Underground. Warhol founded Interview magazine and turned his New York studio, known as the Factory, into a gathering place for artists and figures from the cultural scene. He died in New York in 1987.
