Andrej Tarkovsky (1932–1986) was a Soviet film director and screenwriter. He studied at the Moscow Film School. His debut film, *Ivan’s Childhood*, received an award in Venice. His best-known films include *Mirror*, *Stalker*, *Nostalghia*, and *The Sacrifice*. *The Sacrifice* won the Grand Prix du Jury at Cannes in 1986. Tarkovsky died in Paris that same year.
