Andrej Kurkow, born in 1961 in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), is a Ukrainian writer. He studied foreign languages and initially worked as a newspaper editor; during his military service, he served as a prison guard. He subsequently worked as a cameraman and wrote screenplays for film, radio and television. In 1996, he became a freelance writer. He gained international recognition with his novel “Death and the Penguin” (1999), followed by works including “The Milkman in the Night” (2009). Kurkow writes in Russian.
