Andreas Gryphius (1616–1664) was a German poet and dramatist of the Baroque period. He studied in Leiden and subsequently traveled through Italy and France. From 1650 onward, he worked as a legal adviser in Glogau. His best-known dramas include *Absurda Comica oder Herr Peter Squentz*, *Catharina von Georgien*, and *Leo Armenius*. He is also remembered for his antithetical sonnets, including “Thränen des Vaterlandes” and “Es ist alles eitel.”
