Alphonse Daudet

Alphonse Daudet (1840–1897) was a French writer and playwright. He was born in Nîmes and died in Paris. His best-known works include the novel »Tartarin of Tarascon«, the story collection »Letters from My Windmill«, and the 1868 novel »Le Petit Chose«. After his family’s financial ruin, Daudet worked as a supervisor at a boarding school in Alès. He drew partly on this experience in »Le Petit Chose«, which has autobiographical elements. Daudet was one of the most successful French authors of the second half of the 19th century.
