Alois Carigiet

Alois Carigiet (1902–1985) was a Swiss graphic artist, painter, and children’s book illustrator. After training as a decorative painter, he initially worked at an advertising studio in Zurich. In 1927 he opened his own studio, where he also designed stage sets and costumes for a cabaret. From 1939 onward, he increasingly devoted himself to painting and illustrating children’s books as a freelance artist. He became best known for Schellenursli, written by Selina Chönz, which helped bring the Engadine custom of Chalandamarz to international attention, and for Flurina und das Wildvöglein. Carigiet also wrote and illustrated children’s books of his own. In 1966 he received the Hans Christian Andersen Award as an illustrator and the Swiss Youth Book Prize for Zottel, Zick und Zwerg.
